Imagine life without the paper bag. We use them for lunch, as insulation, as doggy bags and airline nausea reduction receptacles. They carry groceries, provide easy gift wrapping, hold fried or popped food and can even calm us down when we're hyperventilating. They are an amazing invention first created by Francis Wolle on August 16, 1852 and perfected by Margaret E. Knight when she was awarded U.S. Patent 116,842: Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines, July 11, 1871.
July 11th is the anniversary of the square bottom paper bag used the world over and is therefore International Paper Bag Day. It is also a celebration of female inventors, of which Ms. Knight was one of the most prolific.
